Swimming Costume 2

This series of paintings is based on a walk through the streets of Downalong in St Ives. Outside one of the fisherman's cottages I saw a long washing line hung with every type of garment.. all shapes and sizes (shoes and all!). It was as if a very big wave had unexpectedly soaked a whole family. The image seemed to capture the essence of holidays by the beach.

I later developed the idea into the ‘swimming costumes' series, where retro patterns and candy stripes are collaged alongside map sections of Devon and Cornwall and advertisements from the 5o's and 60's to create costumes hanging to dry, almost like a chorus line..
